Riaan Cruywagen retired from broadcasting the news, signing off from his final broadcast on SABC 2 last night. We wanted to honour the man and while searching Google for images of him from the 70’s, we came across this.
Then, we came across this. The obvious thing to do was a meme, and we’d seen this Titanic/Stratos one after Felix Baumgartner’s jump. The meme is inspired by basketball player Yao Ming. We came up with the following and published it on our fan page yesterday.
It’s had over 650 shares in less than 24 hours and is still going strong. That’s Cruy-Cruy. What’s really amazing is that the man is such a cultural icon and yet able to take things a little less seriously when he needs to, embracing his status in the zeitgeist without being limited by it.
